"Hi
Nanna" is a heartwarming tale that truly shines with the brilliant
performances of Nani, Mrunal Thakur, and Kiara Khanna. The film encapsulates
the essence of genuine emotions, weaving a narrative that resonates with
audiences on a profound level.
Hi Nanna is the story of Viraj (Nani) and his 6-year-old daughter Mahi (Baby Kiara Khanna) living in a happy, self-sufficient world, which Yashna (Mrunal Thakur) enters accidentally. Viraj is a fashion photographer in Mumbai, whose life revolves around work and his daughter.
This family is completed by a grandfather (Jayaram) and
their dog, Pluto. Mahi is battling a life-threatening condition, Cystic
Fibrosis, which she innocently calls ’65 roses’.
The story relies
heavily on Nani Mrunal and Kiara’s
performances and the three make you want to root for them. Nani is flawless as
Viraj, a single father looking to fight for his daughter against all odds. If
you share a loving relationship with your father, it’s hard not to see him in
the character. Kiara is adorable and pulls off the role with ease. She even
performs well in some of the film’s emotional moments.
The tale Viraj finally tells is his love story with Varsha
(Mrunal Thakur, again), which took place in Coonoor near Ooty. This love story
between a budding photographer and a tourist flourishes and culminates in
marriage, braving all odds and opposition. Why did their bond break irrevocably,
where is Mahi’s mother now, and what happens to Yashna who finds herself
getting drawn to this father-daughter duo for the rest of the story.
The film is mostly
shot in Mumbai, Coonoor, and Goa which lends to some beautiful, romantic
frames. Shouryuv makes a stellar debut, he clearly knows what he’s doing. Sanu
Varghese’s cinematography is a delight, and so is Hesham Abdul Wahab’s music. The
songs might not stay with you, in the sense that you want to listen to them
over and over again, but they fit in well with the narrative and sometimes, even
add to the scenes.
One
of the film's strengths is its ability to address universal themes while
maintaining a distinct cultural context. "Hi Nanna" transcends
geographical boundaries, making it a story that resonates with audiences across
diverse backgrounds. The cultural nuances enrich the narrative, providing a
unique flavor to the film while ensuring its relatability to a global audience.
The cinematography of "Hi Nanna" deserves special mention, capturing the essence of the story with visual finesse. The lens beautifully frames the emotions, scenic landscapes, and intimate moments, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the film.
