Real Madrid clashed with Villarreal in a thrilling LaLiga encounter during the 2023/24 season, leaving football enthusiasts on the edge of their seats. This highly anticipated match showcased the prowess of two formidable teams, each vying for supremacy on the prestigious Spanish football stage.

Carlo Ancelotti's side were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Betis last weekend, which saw them slip two points adrift of surprise leaders Girona.

Villarreal might be the perfect remedy for Real Madrid, as they are coming off a heavy 3-0 defeat to Real Sociedad in their last LaLiga match, though they followed that up with a 3-2 win over Rennes in the Europa League

Madrid produced an impressive performance, despite David Alaba being forced off through a knee injury in the first half, to sweep aside Villarreal and move a point above previous leaders Girona – who face Alaves tomorrow.

Jude Bellingham netted his 17th goal of the season midway through the first half before Rodrygo doubled their lead, slamming home from a corner.

Jose Luis Morales threatened a comeback with a goal nine minutes after half-time, but the hosts hit back with a quickfire double, beginning with a stunning solo effort by Brahim Diaz, with Luka Modric rounding off the scoring four minutes later.

The defeat did little to change Villarreal’s 14th-placed status and continued their indifferent league form, contrary to their exploits in the Europa League which saw them finish as Group F leaders.

Villarreal arrived with thoughts of surprising a few - Marcelino suggested his team had the weapons to do so – but it didn’t take long for the hosts to make it clear who would be bossing the occasion. A very rare break from those in yellow was only interruption to the steady, composed build-up play that was being cheered on by the tens of thousands in attendance.

When the breakthrough then came midway into the half, there was no surprise from where. Jude Bellingham scored his 13th in 15 and another to remember. While not spectacular, his header had to have enough power and precision to make it past Jorgensen. It did. And let's not forget the ball that found the English superstar, a delectable cross from Modric. Just as unsurprising.

Los Blancos began the second period as they had left off and a third goal was only a matter of time. Well, that 'time' also included Villarreal hinting at a shock comeback when Morales finished off a lovely flowing move 10 minutes after the break.

Ancelotti's men didn't take too long to remind themselves of where they were and the story of the game got back on track. Diaz – who caught the eye again – twisted the away defense inside out to restore the cushion before Modric added a fourth just a few minutes later.

With only 70' gone, we may have seen the scoreline extended further but substitutions were made knowing this game was won. At times tempers flared, Bellingham showed he was more than just talent as he fought for everything he could, and this was a perfect winter's send-off for the home fans.

In the dying minutes of the match, the intensity reached a fever pitch as Real Madrid launched a final assault on Villarreal's goal. A moment of brilliance from a young midfielder unlocked the opposition's defense, and with a perfectly timed assist, Real Madrid found the decisive goal. The stadium erupted as the home team secured a hard-fought victory.
