Vijayakanth was a multifaceted personality renowned for his work as an actor and his significant presence in the political arena as the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). He passed away at the age of 71, marking the end of an era. However, his legacy lives on, reflecting the intricate interplay of life and destiny, encapsulated in the persona of Captain Vijayakanth.
Born on August 25, 1952, in
Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Vijayakanth entered the film industry in the late 1970s.
Over the years, he carved a niche for himself as an actor, earning the title
"Captain" for his powerful on-screen portrayals. His contribution to
the Tamil film industry was notable, and he became a beloved figure for his
impactful performances.
Earlier in the day, his party said that
Vijayakanth had tested positive for COVID and was put on a ventilator due to
breathing issues, however, the hospital bulletin said he battled pneumonia.
Hospital sources told PTI that the party issued that statement even before the
results for the second round of samples were available.
We are deeply
saddened by the passing of DMDK Founder and President, Captain
Vijayakanth. A prolific actor and a leader who was staunchly admired by the
people, his contribution to the social and political empowerment of Tamil Nadu,
shall always be remembered. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends,
admirers and followers,” Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge posted.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed anguish at
Vijayakanth's death. “His contributions to cinema and politics have left an
indelible mark on the hearts of millions. My heartfelt condolences to his
family and fans during this difficult time," the former Congress chief
wrote on the microblogging site
Before venturing
into politics, Vijayakanth featured in 154 movies. vaidehi Kathirunthal, Amman
Kovil Kizhaale, Perarasu, Sethupathu IPS, Kannupada Poguthaiya, Chatriyan,
Narasimha, Ramana, Captain Prabhakaran are some of his films.
He founded the DMDK and served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly
twice, representing the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam. His
political career peaked when he became the Leader of the Opposition in the
Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016.
The
fervor of the meetings could not hide the fact that Vijayakanth was visibly
ailing, with the DMDK ensuring shorter public appearances and showcasing
Premalatha instead.
The 2019 Lok Sabha and 2021 Assembly polls further showed a diminishing Vijayakanth, with his vote share falling to 2.16% and 0.43%, respectively. By this time, Vijayakanth was a cipher of his former self, requiring assistance to get to the stage and sitting there without speaking, as Premalatha tried her best to fill the gap.
As
news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across the nation,
acknowledging his impact on the entertainment and political spheres. The
life and fate of Captain Vijayakanth reflect the intricate tapestry of success,
challenges, and the indomitable spirit with which he faced them.
