Modi’s visit to Maldives and his social media posts documenting
it have led to a social media battle between Maldivian politicians,
government officials, and Indian social media users. Others posted about the
various ways in which India has offered assistance to the Maldives over the
years and some of the more well-known aspects of bilateral cooperation between
the two countries, in response to the mockery by Maldivian social media users.
A massive
controversy erupted after Shiuna, the island nation's deputy minister of youth empowerment,
made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Modi, calling him a ‘clown’ and
‘puppet’ over his recent Lakshadweep visit.
"What appalling language by Maldives Government official
Mariyam Shiuna towards the leader of a key ally, that is instrumental for the
Maldives’ security and prosperity," Mohamed Nasheed said in a post on X
(formerly Twitter).
The Mohamed Muizzu government must distance itself from these
comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect government
policy (sic)," the former president added. The newly-elected government of
Mohammad Muizzu distanced itself from the remarks of its minister on Sunday and
said the relevant authorities “will not hesitate to take action against those
who make such derogatory remarks. India raised concerns over the remarks
against the Indian Prime Minister and diplomatic channels are communicating
India's position with the officials of Maldives.
Muizzu, who is a Sunni Salafi Muslim, won the Maldivian election on a polarising campaign against India by seeking votes on the ouster of Indian troops from Maldives. It is another matter that except for unarmed crews, two Indian helicopters, one Dornier plane, and one offshore petrol vessel (all on loan), there is not a single Indian army soldier on the Muslim-majority island.
The government
believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised democratically and responsibly, and in ways that do not spread hatred, and negativity, and
hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners.
The
resolution of such a scenario would depend on the diplomatic efforts made by
both countries. High-level discussions, apologies, or clarifications might be
exchanged to ease tensions and prevent any long-term damage to the
relationship.
