Sri Lanka vs. Zimbabwe 1st ODI Series: Live Update.
Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are set to face each other in a thrilling One Day International (ODI) series.
The three-match ODI series between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe starts on January 6th. Sri Lanka had a miserable ODI World Cup campaign, suffering humiliating defeats and being bowled out for less than 60 runs twice in 2 months, first in the Asia Cup 2023 Final and then against India in the group stage match at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. This will be Sri Lanka's first match since their ninth-place finish in the ODI World Cup, where they tied with Bangladesh and Netherlands on 4 points each, with Bangladesh being eighth and Netherlands being 10th, based on net run rate.
In contrast, Zimbabwe had a notable 2023 but missed out on a spot in the ODI World Cup after a heartbreaking defeat against Scotland. However, the African nation ended their 2023 campaign with defeats against Ireland in both ODI's and T20I's.
Dushmantha Chameera's short ball over off causes Takudzwanashe Kaitano to go for a pull, but the ball flies over the batter and Kusal Mendis, before racing into the fence.
Both teams are starting their 2024 cricket season with a tour of Sri Lanka for Zimbabwe. In the match, Dilshan Madushanka gets the first wicket for Sri Lanka by dismissing Tinashe Kamunhukamwe for a golden duck. Kamunhukamwe tries to cut, but the ball is too close and shaped inwards, causing him to drag the ball back onto the stumps off the inside edge.
Sri Lanka decided to bat on a favorable wicket and set a target of 274 runs for Zimbabwe in the first innings at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Sri Lanka had a shaky start after losing their first wicket in the opening over, but Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama helped stabilize the team with a 63-run partnership for the second wicket. Samarawickrama scored 41 runs off 37 deliveries, and Mendis contributed 46 runs. Charith Asalanka anchored the innings with an impressive knock of 101 runs off 95 deliveries, helping Sri Lanka reach a respectable total of 273 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.
Sri Lanka's bowlers have to defend this total and secure a victory. In the end, Charith Asalanka is dismissed after a superb knock. Asalanka goes for a drive, but he toe-ends it towards deep cover. He completes the single but hesitates for the second run, and ultimately falls short of his crease due to a mix-up and a great throw from Tapiwa Mufudza in the deep. Clive Madande grabs the throw cleanly and does the rest.
Muzarabani bowls to Charith Asalanka, Sri Lanka's vice-captain, who reaches his century in style! This is his third ODI hundred, and it has come at a time when his team is under pressure. The ball is full and homing in on the pads. Asalanka crouches and swings across the line, hitting it hard enough to clear the deep square leg fielder for a maximum. He takes off his helmet and basks in the applause from the spectators.
Sri Lanka: 1 Kusal Mendis (capt, wk), 2 Avishka Fernando, 3 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 4 Janith Liyanage, 5 Charith Asalanka, 6 Sahan Arachchige, 7 Dasun Shanaka, 8 Maheesh Theekshana, 9 Dushmantha Chameera, 10 Jeffrey Vandersay, 11 Dilshan Madushanka
