Australian cricket captain Steven Smith has expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, saying that everything worked out well for them in the game. He praised the bowlers for their brilliant performance and also appreciated Jake's entertaining skills. Smith hopes that Jake continues to play like this in the future. He concluded by saying that he enjoyed leading the team and the players made it easier for him.
Xavier Bartlett, who was declared the Man of the Series and the Match, expressed his happiness and satisfaction with his performance in the game. He said that he was just trying to take wickets and was well supported by the field set for him. Bartlett also said that he is enjoying being a part of the team and is happy that they are doing well.
In the game, the West Indies team was bowled out for only 86 runs in 24.1 overs, following a dreadful collapse of 6-15 in Canberra. Xavier Bartlett, the Queensland seamer, claimed four wickets to continue his golden summer with the ball. Only one player scored more than 12 runs during the pitiful batting performance as the West Indies registered its second-lowest total against Australia in men’s ODIs and fifth-lowest overall.
In their 1000th ODI match, the Australian cricket team easily chased down a target of 87 runs set by the West Indies in just 6.5 overs. The Australian openers, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Josh Inglis made a mockery of the West Indies bowling attack, with Fraser-McGurk scoring 41 off 18 balls and Inglis remaining unbeaten on 35 runs off 16 balls. This successful run chase is now Australia's fastest in men's ODIs, breaking their previous record of 47 balls against the United States of America in 2004.
The match, which was a dead rubber, finished in just 31 overs, making it the shortest completed ODI on Australian soil. The day-night contest was wrapped up before the floodlights were even required.
The West Indies were not off to a good start as Kjorn Ottley was trapped lbw by Scott Boland for only eight runs. While Kevin Sinclair and Kadeem Alleyne steadied the ship, they were mostly in survival mode, with just 36 runs coming from the opening 10 overs. Their partnership ended when Chris Morris was introduced and grabbed his first international wicket, with Marnus Labuschagne holding a spectacular diving catch at point to remove Keacy Carty for 10.
The highlight of the game was Fraser-McGurk's explosive batting. The 21-year-old was throwing the kitchen sink at everything, charging at Chemar Holder and smacking the West Indies quick over long-on for six before pumping another two maximums over deep mid-wicket into the Bob Hawke Stand. He has all the shots around the ground, and while he hasn't faced much spin yet, he's shown great power. In fact, a couple of shots he played tonight reminded me a lot of Glenn Maxwell, the way the ball was coming off the bat, and the swing he has.
Skipper Shai Hope needed a big score
and drove Morris to the ropes, but he lasted just five balls before falling lbw
to Shaun Abbott, leaving the visitors in trouble on 43-3.
Debutant Teddy Bishop soon followed for
a duck, undone by the sheer pace of Morris whose fullish ball clattered the
middle stump before he left the field midway through his fifth over.
Best of the lot so
far. Glorious. The third boundary in the over. Full and on middle, this is drilled
past mid and the ball races away to the fence.
Aussies are in a
hurry here. On the pads, this is tickled fine on the leg side. This one gets to
the fence too.
What a series
Xavier Bartlett is having. The last known batter goes. Shorter and onto the
body. Chase gets in a tangle as he tries to pull, and hits it to deep square leg
where Jake Fraser-McGurk takes an easy catch.
Romario Shepherd
with another cheap score. The sixth one is down. This is full and outside off, and swings
away late. Shepherd looks to drive but edges it to the keeper who makes no
mistake. West Indies are falling apart here.
The hosts have made a solid start and put West Indies under tremendous pressure. While West Indies only lost one wicket in the first 10 overs, they followed up by losing three more in the next five overs, undoing all the good work they had done. They need a big partnership now and will look upon Roston Chase, who has been in good form lately, to bail the team out of this position.
Sean Abbott has just hit a short ball onto Alick Athanaze's body, leading to a top edge that flies above the keeper for a boundary, bringing up the 50.
Lance Morris bowls brilliantly, gifting a duck on Teddy Bishop's debut. Morris bowls very full and slanting on the middle, and Bishop looks to flick it but misses. The ball rolls underneath his bat and hits the stumps, not a great start for Bishop.
Marnus Labuschagne is outstanding, diving like a goalkeeper to pluck a catch out of thin air. Keacy Carty cuts the ball on the up and to the right of the point, but Labuschagne doesn't drop while going on the ground.
Xavier Bartlett gets Kjorn Ottley out with a full and swinging delivery in the middle that Ottley misses and gets hit on the pads, right in the front. An appeal is made, and the finger goes up. Ottley has a word with his partner and walks off.
Cameron Green to Kjorn
Ottley, FOUR! Superb shot! Very full and outside off. Kjorn Ottley bends
his back and drives it through cover-point for a boundary. Two outstanding shots.
