India and England 4th Test Day, Joe Root and Ollie Robinson helped England finish Day 1 at 302/7 at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. At one point in the evening session, it seemed like India was going to dismiss England's batting lineup, but Robinson's useful cameo helped England to recover. Root played a gritty innings to score a century and hold the English batting effort together.
The Indian bowlers had an excellent start at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. They took three wickets from Ollie Pope, Zack Crawley, and Ben Duckett in quick succession while not letting England get away with the scoring rate. Akash Deep had a dream debut as he dismissed two batters in the same over and took three wickets in his Test debut.
The spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja struck in quick succession before Lunch, further bolstering India's dominance. England found themselves in trouble at 112/5, but Root and Foakes steadied the ship with a resilient partnership after Lunch. Their partnership exceeded 100 runs, and although they accelerated after tea, Siraj's fiery spell saw the dismissal of Foakes and Hartley, swinging the momentum back towards India.
Earlier in the day, Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat first at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. While England had already announced two changes to their playing XI, India made only one change to the playing XI in the form of Akash Deep, who took the place of Jasprit Bumrah. India will win the series if they defeat England in this encounter, while England would be aiming to get back to winning ways after two back-to-back losses.
Mohammed Siraj struck the breakthrough in the final session of Day 1, dismissing Ben Foakes on 47 to end a gritty 113-run stand for the sixth wicket. Root and Foakes kept the aggressive ‘Bazball’ style of batting in the backburner and their resistance seemed to have frustrated India with a lot of frowning faces towards the end of that session. Rohit Sharma burned their last remaining review for an LBW decision against Foakes.
India has been forced to give debut caps to Rajat Patidar, Dhruv Jurel, and Sarfaraz Khan due to the absence of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer. With pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah being rested for the Ranchi Test, Akash Deep could also be in line for the coveted Test spot. Additionally, Devdutt Padikkal is knocking on the doors with Patidar failing to impress in his first four innings.
Joe Root played exceptionally well in the match and bounced back with his 31st Test century. None of those reverse scoops were on display today. He stuck to the trusted traditional shots and played well alongside Ben Foakes, which helped England bounce back from a precarious 112 for five. Earlier in the day, Akash Deep tore through the England top order in the first session. Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets in the final session, which gave hope to India of ending the English innings on Day 1 before Root and Ollie Robinson took matters into their hands.
Yashasvi Jaiswal bowls the final over of the day. Six runs off it including a boundary from Robinson down the ground.
Akash Deep gives away seven runs from his over. He oversteps and Robinson picks a boundary of it too.
Robinson runs down the first delivery down to fine leg for two runs. It was a certain boundary had it not been for Kuldeep’s diving save.
A big appeal from Akash Deep was turned down by Rod Tucker. The ball hit Root on his left pad and was likely going down the leg. Good decision.
England reached 250 with
a four, thanks to a gift from Jadeja. The ball slips from his hand and reaches
Robinson above the waist height. The right-handed batter swings it hard and
clears midwicket.
Siraj comes from
around the wicket and angles the ball into the left-hander; the ball moves
sharply away from Hartley right after pitching, and a backfoot defense shot
leads to no avail.
It will be
interesting to see if Rohit opts for the new ball right now. Mohammed Siraj is
bowling his fifth over on the trot, and Gavaskar opines that it is unlikely the
captain will take the new ball just yet.
Jonny Bairstow
brought up England's first fifty stand of the match with a four carved away in
front of point and he's gone, trapped lbw by R Ashwin. It took an India review
to secure the dismissal after Bairstow was originally adjudged not out by
on-field umpire Rod Tucker. The ball pitched on leg stump from around the
wicket and straightened to strike Bairstow high on the back leg as he knelt to
sweep. Bairstow 38 off 35 balls in a 52-run partnership for the fourth wicket
with Joe Root but England slipped to 109 for 4.
England went an entire
session without losing a wicket. India seems to have given in to the frustration
a bit towards the end of the session, burning a review on an LBW appeal against
Ben Foakes. Who would've thought that England's first wicketless session of
this series would've come today considering how that first session went. Root
is on 67 off 154, and Foakes has made 28 in 108.
The last ball of the
next over from Jadeja is guided away to the boundary off the backfoot by Root.
Jadeja shouts and swipes his cap through the air in frustration. Root moves to
66 off 148, Foakes is on 28 off 96. This stand is now worth 84 runs and has
absorbed 203 balls.
What a partnership
this is turning out to be for England. 67 runs in 167 balls, so very important
for England at this point, and, considering how this pitch is playing out, these
two might just have given England a chance at a good score now.
A single off the fifth
ball of the 49th from Ashwin does the job for the former England captain. First
one of the series for the talismanic batter as well. The Barmy Army starts belting
out that song for him which is based on The Beatles.
That was as
action-packed a session as you can ever hope to see in a Test match. More than
100 runs on the board for England but five wickets for India as well. Several appeals, several reviews, and most of them successful ones. Akash Deep
stands tall among all that rubble with three wickets in his maiden spell in
international cricket. Tempting to say that India is well ahead in this match
but the fact remains that their batters will also have to navigate this pitch
whenever this England innings ends.
